Welcome to Chronicle & Canvas (“Chronicle & Canvas,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). These Terms & Conditions (the “Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Chronicle & Canvas website, applications, and related services (collectively, the “Service”). By creating an account, accessing, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you may only use the Service with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.
2. The Service
Chronicle & Canvas helps you transform tabletop role-playing session materials — transcripts, audio recordings, notes, and similar inputs — into illustrated, narrative chronicles using artificial intelligence. Specific features, capabilities, and limits may change over time at our discretion.
3. Accounts
Accounts are created through third-party single sign-on (currently Discord). You are responsible for safeguarding access to your account and for all activity that occurs under it. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep that information up to date. You may terminate your account at any time through your account settings or by contacting us.
4. Your Content
Any campaign material, audio, transcripts, notes, images, edits, character descriptions, and other content you submit to the Service (“Your Content”) remains yours. You retain all rights to Your Content, subject to the limited license described below.
By submitting Your Content to the Service, you grant Chronicle & Canvas a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, process, transmit, and display Your Content solely for the purpose of operating, providing, and improving the Service for you. This includes sending Your Content to the third-party AI providers we use to deliver our features (see Section 8).
You represent and warrant that you have the rights necessary to submit Your Content and that doing so does not infringe the rights of any third party. You are solely responsible for Your Content.
5. AI-Generated Output
The Service produces narrative prose, character portraits, scene illustrations, summaries, and other outputs using generative AI (“AI Outputs”). AI Outputs are generated algorithmically and may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or otherwise unsuitable for your purpose. You are responsible for reviewing AI Outputs before relying on them, sharing them, or publishing them anywhere outside the Service.
Ownership of AI Outputs. All images, illustrations, portraits, and other visual AI Outputs generated on or through the Service are the property of Chronicle & Canvas. By using the Service, you grant Chronicle & Canvas all right, title, and interest in and to such generated images, including the right to reproduce, display, distribute, and create derivative works. Chronicle & Canvas grants you a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use AI Outputs generated for you for your personal and creative purposes, including sharing through the Service’s public-link feature. AI Outputs may resemble outputs generated for other users; the Service does not grant you exclusive rights to any particular AI Output.
Public shareable link. When you create a campaign on the Service, Chronicle & Canvas automatically generates a publicly-accessible, read-only shareable version of that campaign at a unique URL. This link is created at campaign creation — not when you click “Share” or any equivalent action — and remains active for the lifetime of the campaign. Anyone with the URL can view the campaign’s currently-published story, illustrations, and other public-facing content without signing in, and the URL may be indexed by search engines and included in our public sitemap. Each time you publish a new version of your story, the same shareable URL is updated to reflect that latest published version — viewers always see your most recently published content at that link. Unpublished drafts are not exposed at the public URL. The URLs are non-sequential and difficult to guess, but you should treat any content you publish to a campaign as potentially viewable by anyone. If you delete the campaign, the shareable link stops resolving.
Public visibility. You acknowledge and agree that AI Outputs generated on the Service — including images, illustrations, and accompanying text — may be made visible to the public by Chronicle & Canvas. This may include, without limitation, surfacing AI Outputs in public galleries, promotional and marketing materials, shared-link previews, social media, community showcases, and product demonstrations, with or without attribution.
Right to remove AI Outputs. Chronicle & Canvas reserves the right, in its sole discretion and at any time, to remove, hide, blur, or otherwise restrict access to any AI Output generated on the Service that we determine to be harmful, hateful, racist, sexist, discriminatory, sexually explicit (especially involving minors), violent, defamatory, infringing, or otherwise objectionable, regardless of who prompted its generation. We may do so without prior notice and without obligation to provide a replacement, refund, credit, or explanation.
Not responsible for generated content. AI Outputs are produced by third-party generative AI models that Chronicle & Canvas does not own, train, or control, acting on prompts and inputs you provide. Chronicle & Canvas is not responsible for the content, accuracy, legality, appropriateness, or consequences of any AI Output, including any AI Output that offends, harms, or misrepresents any person or subject. You acknowledge that the user inputs you provide are the primary determinant of what an AI Output depicts, and that Chronicle & Canvas neither curates nor pre-screens generations before they are produced.
6. Subscriptions, Billing, and Pricing
The Service offers a free tier with limited features and one or more paid subscription tiers that unlock additional features and/or higher usage limits. Subscription fees, billing intervals, included features, and usage limits are described on our pricing page or within the Service at the time of purchase. All amounts are charged and displayed in U.S. dollars unless otherwise indicated.
Authorization for recurring charges. By starting a paid subscription, you expressly authorize us (through our payment processor) to charge the payment method on file for the applicable subscription fee plus any taxes, automatically at the start of each billing cycle (monthly or other interval shown at checkout), until you cancel. You confirm that you are authorized to use that payment method. This authorization continues until you cancel the subscription or remove the payment method.
Cancellation and resumption. You can cancel at any time through your account settings. Cancellation does not take effect immediately — it is scheduled for the end of your current billing period, and you will retain full access to your paid features until that date. You may resume your subscription at any time before the period ends and avoid the cancellation taking effect. We do not pro-rate or refund fees for the unused portion of a cancelled billing period.
Tier changes and proration. When you change subscription tiers in the middle of a billing period, we adjust your next invoice to reflect the prorated difference between what you have already paid and the price of your new tier. Upgrades typically result in a prorated charge on your next invoice; downgrades typically result in a prorated credit applied toward future invoices. Tier changes do not extend or restart your billing anniversary. Where a downgrade reduces your usage allowances, you remain subject to the lower allowances going forward; previously-purchased one-time credits (such as session packs) carry over.
Failed payments. If a scheduled charge fails (for example, because your card has expired or has insufficient funds), your subscription will enter a past-due state. During this period we will retry the charge on a schedule set by our payment processor and may notify you to update your payment method. Access to paid features may be restricted or interrupted while your subscription is past-due. If the charge cannot be collected after the retry window concludes, your subscription will be cancelled and your account will be downgraded to the free tier; you can resubscribe at any time.
Pricing changes. The cost of operating the Service — particularly the underlying AI providers we rely on — may change without notice to us. We therefore reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to change our subscription prices, billing intervals, free-tier limits, paid-tier features, and usage allowances at any time. For existing paid subscribers, we will make reasonable efforts to give advance notice (typically by email or in-app notification) before a price change takes effect on your subscription, and you may cancel before the next billing cycle if you do not accept the change. Continued use of a paid subscription after a pricing or feature change takes effect constitutes acceptance of that change.
Active campaigns. Each subscription tier permits a maximum number of currently active campaigns. To create a new campaign once you’ve reached your tier’s limit, you must either delete an existing campaign (which permanently removes its content) or upgrade to a higher tier. Where a plan is marketed as offering “unlimited” active campaigns, that benefit is subject to a fair-use policy of up to 15 active campaigns per account; we reserve the right to deny additional campaign creation beyond that threshold.
Payment processing. Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc., our PCI-compliant payment processor. We do not store full payment-card details on our own systems. Your provision of payment information to Stripe is governed by Stripe’s own terms of service and privacy policy, which you should review.
Chargebacks and disputes. If you believe a charge is in error, please contact us before initiating a chargeback so we can attempt to resolve it directly. Initiating a chargeback or payment dispute may result in suspension of your account pending resolution. We reserve the right to permanently terminate accounts that we determine, in good faith, have engaged in fraudulent or abusive chargeback activity, and to reverse any AI Outputs, credits, or other benefits granted to such accounts.
Refunds. Except where required by law, all fees are non-refundable. This includes both recurring subscription fees and one-time purchases such as session packs. Refunds are not issued automatically for any reason — including unused portions of a billing period, dissatisfaction with AI Outputs, feature changes, failed individual generations, or downgrades. If you believe a specific charge or service failure warrants a refund, you must contact us directly at support@chroniclecanvas.com and describe the issue. We will review such requests on a case-by-case basis and may, in our sole discretion, issue a partial or full refund where we determine one is appropriate. Submitting a refund request does not guarantee a refund. Taxes may apply and will be calculated based on your billing address.
No refunds for generative failures. The Service relies on third-party generative AI providers to produce illustrations, chapter prose, summaries, character portraits, and other AI Outputs. Generation is inherently probabilistic and may occasionally fail, error out, produce empty or unsatisfactory results, or take longer than expected. Such failures are an expected part of any generative AI service and do not, by themselves, entitle you to a refund, credit, or replacement of any subscription fee or one-time purchase. Where the Service offers per-action retry affordances (such as regenerating an illustration), those affordances are the primary remedy for unsatisfactory or failed generations.
7. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Upload content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, threatening, hateful, sexually explicit involving minors, or otherwise objectionable;
- Upload content that infringes the intellectual property, privacy, or other rights of any third party;
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or otherwise misuse the Service or the AI Outputs it produces;
- Use the Service to develop, train, or improve any competing AI model or service;
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service, its servers, or the experience of other users;
- Use automated means (bots, scripts) to access the Service beyond rate limits or in a manner that imposes an unreasonable load on our infrastructure.
We may remove content or suspend or terminate accounts that we reasonably believe violate these Terms, with or without notice.
8. Third-Party Services
The Service relies on third-party providers for authentication, hosting, AI processing, payment, and related functions, including (without limitation) Discord, Google Cloud Platform, Firebase, and one or more AI providers (such as Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and/or OpenAI). Your use of the Service necessarily involves transmission of data to and processing by these providers, subject to their respective terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services and do not endorse them.
Chronicle & Canvas utilizes third-party generative AI networks. Features relying on these networks are subject to upstream availability, and processing times may vary based on provider demand. Outages, rate limits, latency, or changes introduced by these providers may affect, slow, or interrupt the Service from time to time, and we are not liable for any such delays or interruptions beyond our control.
Discord integration. Chronicle & Canvas offers an optional Discord integration intended to make recording and transcribing tabletop sessions easier. This integration is provided as a convenience and depends on third-party systems (notably the Discord platform and APIs) that we do not control. We do not guarantee any particular level of uptime, latency, or reliability for the Discord integration. We try our best to keep it running smoothly, but we cannot ensure that it will always work as anticipated or as advertised, and we are not liable for any missed recordings, lost audio, failed transcriptions, or other consequences resulting from interruptions to the integration.
9. Our Intellectual Property
The Service, including its software, design, branding (including the Chronicle & Canvas name and logos), documentation, and underlying content (excluding Your Content and AI Outputs generated for you), are owned by Chronicle & Canvas or its licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other applicable laws. Except as expressly permitted by these Terms, you may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works of any part of the Service.
10. Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time and may terminate your account through your account settings. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including (without limitation) violation of these Terms or risk to the Service or its users. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately, and we may delete Your Content and account data in accordance with our retention practices.
Data retention after termination. Following account termination — whether initiated by you or by us — we retain Your Content and account data for up to 30 days in case of accidental termination or recovery requests. After that period, Your Content (including campaigns, sessions, characters, transcripts, and AI Outputs generated for you) is permanently deleted from our active systems. Backup copies may persist for a limited additional period before being overwritten in the normal course of backup rotation. Cancellation of a paid subscription (without account termination) does not delete Your Content; your account simply downgrades to the free tier and the free-tier limits begin to apply. Records we are required to retain for legal, tax, accounting, or fraud-prevention purposes (such as billing history) may be kept longer than 30 days.
11. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, or availability. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that AI Outputs will be accurate or fit for any particular purpose.
Generative content may fail. The Service depends on generative AI for core features — including but not limited to chapter illustrations, scene illustrations, character portraits, narrative prose, summaries, and prose refinements. Generative AI is probabilistic and may not work 100% of the time: individual generations may fail outright, return errors, produce unexpectedly poor results, or take longer than usual to complete. We do not warrant that any specific generation, feature, or category of AI Output will succeed on any given attempt or at any given level of quality. As described in Section 6, a failed or unsatisfactory generation does not, by itself, entitle you to a refund of any subscription fee or one-time purchase.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Chronicle & Canvas and its affiliates, officers, employees, and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of (or inability to use) the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Chronicle & Canvas and its affiliates from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or relating to (a) Your Content, (b) your use of the Service, or (c) your violation of these Terms or any applicable law.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you by email or through the Service. Material changes will become effective no sooner than the date posted; continued use of the Service after that date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
15. Governing Law & Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Chronicle & Canvas is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. You agree that any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
